The reason why the Santa Claus Village is located on the Arctic Circle is because the exceptionally thin Earth's crust in places allows meddling with the course of time. Indeed, it is the Santa Claus Office that controls the velocity of the revolving Earth, thereby enabling Santa to visit every home at Christmas. Now you know why time sometimes feels so slow when you want it to go faster. When you step into the Santa Claus Office, you may hear how this enormous machine spins the Earth around its axis at velocities specified by Santa Claus.
Arctic Circle
The Northern Arctic Circle is the southern border for the summertime Midnight Sun and wintertime Twilight. North of the Arctic Circle the Sun remains above the horizon throughout the night for at least a single day, and correspondingly during the wintertime the Sun stays below the horizon for at least a day. People say that crossing the Arctic Circle takes years away from your mental age.

Surface area: 8.016 km², of which 7.601 km² is land and 415 km² is water. Population density: 7.83 people per km². Capital of Finnish Lapland, located on the Arctic Circle. Rovaniemi was released from the continental ice sheet 9.000 years ago but the area remained under water, with only the highest hills forming
islands. The area of the current city centre became free of its water cover 7.000 years ago. Rovaniemi life is broadcasted over the internet: there are webcams showing the Jätkänkynttilä and Ounaskoski bridges, the main library, Ounasvaara ski centre and Lordi's Square. Rovaniemi Airport is one of the most international in Finland and it is `The Official Airport of Santa Claus'.

Spring in Lapland is the best season of all. There is no doubt when the dim blue twilight of mid winter is long gone and the days of white shimmering snow are once more with us. By day, the sun brings warmth while at night freezing temperatures kick in under the starry skies and Northern Lights. This is when it is good to stop and inhale deeply. There is a certain freshness in the air that would be hard to find anywhere else than here at the pure nature of Lapland. Rovaniemi on vilkas matkailukaupunki Ounas- ja Kemijoen syleilyssä. Lapin pääkaupunki on portti Lappiin.

ovaniemi on hyötynyt sijainnistaan Kemi- ja Ounasjoen yhtymäkohdassa. Rovaniemestä tuli jo varhain tukkijätkien, markkinamiesten ja käsityöläisten kohtaamispaikka. Asutusta on ollut aina 1100-luvulta lähtien. Kunnan perustamiskirjat tehtiin vuonna 1785 ja kaupunkioikeudet se sai 1. tammikuuta 1960. Nimi tulee saamenkielen sanasta roavve, joka tarkoittaa metsää kasvavaa harjua tai vaaraa. Rovaniemi on aina ollut läpikulkupaikka Lappiin tai ete-
lään mentäessä. Rautatie tuli kaupunkiin vuonna 1909 ja 1920-luvulla alkoi syntyä majoitus- ja matkailuyrityksiä: legendaarinen hotelli Pohjanhovi, matkamuistomyymälöitä, näköalapaikkoja ja napapiiri. Rovaniemelle väkeä vetivät myös
maankuulut markkinat, joita järjestettiin jo 1880-luvulla. Nykyään Rovaniemi muodostuu kymmenistä kyläkeskuksista, jotka levittäytyvät pitkälle napapiirin kahta puolta. Ympäri vuoden vilkas matkailukaupunki tunnetaan laajalti maailmalla.
Joka vuosi kaupunkiin saapuvat noin puoli miljoonaa matkailijaa ovatkin nousseet tärkeäksi tulonlähteeksi ja kaupungissa on maan toiseksi eniten kansainvälisiä talvimatkailijoita heti Helsingin jälkeen. Rovaniemellä voi nauttia neljästä vuodenajasta: tunnelmallisesta joulusta ja hohtavien hiihtokelien keväästä, valoisista kesäöistä ja syksyn väriloistosta. Tunnettuja rovaniemeläisiä ovat muun muassa kirjailija Jorma Etto, jonka mukaan nimettyä katua voi kävellä teatterilta lähtien. Antti Tuisku ponnisti

kaupan kassalta poptähdeksi ja Euroviisut voittaneen Lordiyhtyeen keulahahmo Tomi Putaansuu on myös Lapin pääkaupungista kotoisin. Lordin aukio sijaitsee keskustassa, matkailuneuvonnan vieressä. Vuodenvaihteessa 2005-2006 kaupungin historiassa kääntyi uusi sivu, kun Rovaniemen kaupunki ja maalaiskunta yhdistyvät yhdeksi kunnaksi. Kaupungin väkiluku rikkoi 60 000 asukkaan rajan syksyllä 2010. Kaupunki on väkiluvultaan Suomen 15. suurin kunta ja pinta-alaltaan, 8016 km 2 , Euroopan suurin kaupunki - tosin iso osa pintaalasta on metsän peitossa.

The Largest City in Europe
Rovaniemi lies in a prime location at the place where two great rivers Kemijoki and Ounasjoki meet, so it is no surprise that it has a long history. Since early times it has been the gathering place for lumberjacks, traders, and handicraftsmen and it has been settled since the 1100s. The charter for the Municipality of Rovaniemi was drawn up in 1785 and it received city rights on 1.1.1960. Rovaniemi has always been the stopping place for those travelling north or coming south. Its widely renowned fair has attracted people from far and wide since 1880s. The 1920s saw the birth of tourism here with the building of the legendary Hotel Pohjanhovi, souvenir shops, viewing points, and finally, the start of the development at the Arctic Circle. Every season has its own atmosphere. The history of the city entered a new era at the turn of 2005-2006 when the City and the Rural Municipality of Rovaniemi merged into one. The new city has a population of more than 60.000. With a surface area of 8016 km2, it is the 15th largest city in Europe - though much of it is covered in forest.

Matka maailman huipulle
Arktikum täyttää 20 vuotta, ja monipuolinen matka arktisille alueille täydentyy juhlavuoden tapahtumilla ja näyttelyillä.

rktikumin lasikaton suojissa valotetaan Lapin ystäville pohjoisen historiaa ja mystiikkaa. - Revontulien synnystä on olemassa ainakin kaksi tarinaa, kertoo Arktikum-Palvelu Oy:n toimitusjohtaja Päivi Heikkala. Metsäsuomalaisten mukaan kyseessä on taivaalla lentävä tulikettu. Inuiittien mielestä valot syntyvät, kun kuolleet sielut pelaavat taivaalla mursun kallolla jalkapalloa. Molemmat tarinat ja monta muuta mielenkiintois-
ta asiaa revontulista kerrotaan Arktisen keskuksen Muuttuva Arktis -näyttelyn Revontulihuoneessa. Lapin maakuntamuseon Pohjoiset keinot -näyttely kertoo Ylä-Lapin, Rovaniemen ja Peräpohjolan historiasta. Suosituimpia kohteita on saamelaisten elämää esittelevä osasto, jossa on esillä puku- ja koruloistoa Ylä-Lapista. Peräpohjola, eli nykyisen Lapin eteläosa esitellään elinkeinojen kautta. Tukkityöt, kalastus ja heinänteko täyttivät entisajan ihmisten arjen. Esillä
on myös uudempaa ajanvietettä eli aito 70-lukulainen baari Savukoskelta. Rovaniemen osaston vetonauloja ovat kaupungin sotavuosia esittelevät pienoismallit. Tutkittavana on myös sotavitriini, jossa esitellään kaikkien Suomen sotien vaikutukset Lappiin. Arktikumissa sijaitseva Lapin yliopiston Arktinen keskus esittelee pohjoisten alueiden nykypäivää Muuttuva Arktis -näyttelyssä. Näyttely esittelee alueen luontoa ja kulttuuria sekä kertoo nopeista sosiaalisista ja ympäris-
tömuutoksista. Arktinen keskus on valtakunnallinen tutkimuslaitos ja tiedekeskus joka tekee kansainvälisesti arvostettua tutkimusta. Arktikum täyttää tänä vuonna 20 vuotta. Vuoden aikana tulee olemaan erilaisia tapahtumia ja näyttelyitä. Arktikumin vieressä sijaitseva Metsähallituksen tiedekeskus Pilke puolestaan kertoo pohjoisten metsien ekologiasta ja biologiasta sekä puunkorjuusta, puun käytöstä sekä metsän kulttuurisesta merkityksestä.
Art and Music in the Korundi House
The Korundi House of Culture, opened in May, has been created by renovating the region's old mailcoach and van depot, with the principle of combining old and new. Both the Rovaniemi Art Museum and the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland are now located in Korundi. In the opening exhibition, titled Nature Forte, the forces of nature and human mind are portrayed through a selection of modern art from the collections of Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation. The acoustics in the new concert hall of the Chamber Orchestra of Lapland are of top quality. The hall has been designed especially for chamber music, but it can also be used for popular music, conferences and seminars. The stage is large enough for an orchestra of 30 musicians, and the concert hall seats 340 listeners. Since the 1930's, the old central mail delivery depot used to be a lively community of both work and residence, and people want to cherish the atmosphere. It is hoped that Korundi will establish itself as an cosy living-room for both city dwellers and visitors, a place where you can find delight in music and art. Korundi also houses an art library, a café and a museum shop.

Journey to the Top of the World
Under the shelter of the glass roof of Arktikum, friends of Lapland are enlightened about the history and mystique of the north. - There are at least two traditional accounts of the birth of northern lights, managing director Päivi Heikkala from Arktikum-Palvelu Inc. tells us. According to the Forest Finns of old, first settlers of Swedish backwoods, the phenomenon is actually a firefox flying in the sky. The Inuits used to believe that the lights come about when the souls of the dead play football in the sky with a walrus skull. Both of these stories and a wealth of other fascinating features of the Arctic regions are displayed vividly in The Changing Arctic, Arctic Centre's exhibition in the Northern Lights Room. There you can also admire animated fires of the sky, while in the Polarium Meeting Hall the nature of Lapland may be explored by enjoying the multivision show Under the Northern Lights. The exhibition Pohjoiset keinot Northern Ways in the Provincial Museum of Lapland, now situated in Arktikum, tells you about the history of Upper Lapland, the Rovaniemi area, and The southern part of Lapland. A very popular department is the one portraying the life of the Sámi people. There you are likely to be impressed by a stunning display of costumes and jewelry from Upper Lapland. The southern part of Lapland, is introduced through its livelihoods. Lumber work, fishing and haymaking filled the working days of people in the old days. More recent pastimes are also on display, e.g. a genuine 1970's northern Finnish-style coffee-and- beer bar from Savukoski. The chief attraction of the Rovaniemi section are the small-scale models of the city representing the wartime years. The first one introduces Rovaniemi as it was in 1939, just prior to the war, while the second version is based on the situation of 1944, when only about ten percent of the buildings remained. There is also a showcase where the effects on Lapland of all the wars that have involved Finland are displayed. The Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland, housed in Arktikum, too, demonstrates the present time of the northern regions in its exhibition called The Changing Arctic. It tells you about the nature and culture of the Arctic areas and about the ongoing rapid social and environmental changes in the circumpolar regions. The Arctic Centre is a national research and science centre which carries out internationally renowned research on arctic regions. This year Arktikum celebrates its 20th anniversary. During the year, a wide variety of events and exhibitions will be arranged. Next door to Arktikum is situated also Pilke, the new Metsähallitus forestry research centre, whose displays offer information about the ecology and biology of boreal forests and about the harvesting of wood, its uses, and the cultural significance of forests. You even get a chance to find out about the infamous past of the block.

Ei ole sattumaa, että Joulupukki on Napapiirillä.
K
aikki ympäri maailman tietävät, että Joulupukki asuu Suomessa. Siitä ovat merkkinä tuhannet ja taas tuhannet kirjeet Joulupukin Pääpostiin Napapiirille. Toisinaan osoitteena voi olla Santa Claus - Finland. Onneksi postinjakaja osaa toimittaa kirjeet oikeaan osoitteeseen, joka on Joulupukki, 96930 Napapiiri. Joulupukin koti ja salainen paja ovat Korvatunturilla hankalan kulkuyhteyden päässä. Jos jokainen pääsisi siellä käymään, joululahjoissa olisi enää mitään jännitettävää. Vuoden jokaisena
päivänä Joulupukki tulee toimistoonsa Napapiirille. Siellä hän tapaa vieraita ympäri maailmaa, vastaa saamiinsa kirjeisiin ja kuuntelee lapsivieraiden lahjatoiveita. Kukaan ei koskaan ole saanut selville, miten Pukki kulkee työmatkansa. Tosin hänellä on monia muitakin salaisuuksia. Osa niistä selviää, kun kävelee pitkin satukäytävää kohti pukin kammaria. Siellä ovat pukin erikoiset saappaat, joita hän tarvitsee kulkiessaan suomaiden yli. Apuväline, jolla hän laskee lahjat savupiipusta alas, on monta metriä pitkä. Joulupukin
suurin salaisuus on se, että hän pystyy hidastamaan ajan kulkua eli kelloa. Napapiirillä Joulupukin pajakylässä käy vierailijoita vuoden jokaisena päivänä, kuten on käynyt jo vuosikymmenet. Yhdysvaltain edesmenneen presidentin rouva Eleanor Roosevelt oli virallisesti ensimmäinen, kun paikka hänen kunniakseen avattiin kesällä 1950. Arvokasta vierailua varten Napapiirille rakennettu pieni maja on edelleen Joulupukin pääpostin vieressä. Napapiirin maagiset koordinaatit ovat 66°33'07". Eikä ole
sattumaa, että Joulupukki on napapiirillä. Sen eteläpuolella ei nimittäin ole tontuille tarpeeksi lunta. Toisaalta kesän yöttömästä yöstä nauttivat Pukin lisäksi Joulumuori ja tontut, joiden nukkumaanmenoaika on kesäaikaan paljon myöhemmin syystä, että aurinko paistaa Napapiirillä läpi yön. Pajakylässä on monta erilaista kauppaa tuliais- ja lahjaostoksiin. Postikortit saavat Napapiirin oman leiman ja valokuva Joulupukin tapaamisesta on mukava muisto.

Where does Santa live?
It is not by chance that Santa Claus lives at the Arctic Circle. But what is the reason? Everyone knows that Santa lives in Finland. The proof can be found in the thousands of letters that arrive at Santa's Main Post Office at the Arctic Circle. Sometimes the address is only Santa Claus, Finland. Luckily, the postman knows where to deliver the letters; the correct address is Santa Claus, 96930 Arctic Circle. The home and secret workshop of Santa lie in Korvatunturi, a remote fell with very difficult access. If everybody could visit his abode, the suspense of Christmas presents would be lost. Santa comes to his office at the Arctic Circle every day. There he receives visitors, deals with his correspondence, and listens to the gift wishes of his guests. No one has ever found out how Santa travels to work. But then he has many other secrets, too. Some of them you can find out when you walk along the magic corridor towards his chamber. You can see his special boots which he needs when crossing marshlands. He also has a device to lower the presents down the chimney. The biggest secret is Santa´s ability to slow down the passing of time. Santa Claus Village gets many visitors every day of the year. Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the late President of the United States, was the first official visitor, as the village was specially opened in her honour in the summer of 1950. The small cabin that was built for this distinguished guest still stands next to Post Office. The magic coordinates of the Arctic Circle are 66° 33' 07". And it is indeed no accident that Santa can be met at the Arctic Circle. To the south of it, there is not enough snow for the elves. Santa and Mrs Santa, together with the elves, also enjoy the white summer nights. There are plenty of various shops for buying gifts and presents in Santa's Village. Postcards are stamped with the special Arctic Circle postmark, and a photo of your meeting with Santa is a nice memento.

aaran huippu on 203 metriä merenpinnasta Kemijoen ja Ounasjoen yhtymäkohdassa. Juhannuskalliona tunnetulta kalliohuipulta avautuu upea näköala, joka muovautui jääkauden aikana. Mannerjää peitti kaiken alleen ja vaaran huippu oli kuin saari, ainoa jäästä vapaa kohta. Ounasvaaran Hiihtokeskuksen sijainti ei voisi olla parempi keskellä Lapin pääkaupunkia. Seitsemän laskettelurinteen lisäksi on street- ja half pipe -rinteet ja lastenrinne. Rinteeseen voi suunnata myös hiihtokoulun kautta. Välinevuokraamosta saa varusteet niin lasketteluun kuin lumilautailuunkin. Maastohiihtäjälle on sata kilometriä hoidettuja latuja, joista puolet on valaistu. Reitit on jaettu helposta vaikeaan ja haastavaan jäälatuun. Vaaralla harjoittelevat sekä innokkaat harrastajahiihtäjät että kansainväliset joukkueet. Tottorakka on vaativampi hiihtoalue. Vauhdikkaalla talvikelkkaradalla lasketaan ohjauksella ja jarruilla varustetuilla erikoiskelkoilla.
Santasport Lapin Urheiluopisto tarjoaa liikunnallisia elämyksiä. Pyöreäkattoisen rakennuksen suojissa on mahdollista harrastaa sisälajeja keilailusta ohjattuun liikuntaan. Kotimaiset ja ulkomaalaiset huippu-urheilijat harjoittelevat valmennuskeskuksessa. Lasten liikuntamaailmassa seikkaillaan viidakossa kiipeillen ja leikkien. Nordic Fitness Sports Park on ympärivuotiseen liikkumiseen tarkoitettu liikuntaja matkailualue. Maastoon merkityt reitit tarjoavat mahdollisuuden nauttia ulkoilusta vaikka leppoisalla kävelylenkillä. Välineitä maastohiihtoon, lumikenkäilyyn ja sauvakävelyyn saa vuokraamosta. Saunan lämpö rentouttaa ulkoilun jälkeen. Yrttikylvyissä on huomioitu kaikki aistit ja viimeisen silauksen antavat hieronta sekä uutuutena kauneushoidot. Majoituksessa on valinnanvaraa. Urheiluopistolle ovat valmistuneet uudet Sporthotel-huoneet. Lakituvat hiihtokeskuksen ja kylpylän välissä ovat tasokkaita mökkejä, jotka sopivat isommallekin porukalle. Lapland Hotel Sky Ounasvaara tarjoaa komeat maisemat ja herkulliset ateriat.

Ounasvaara - The Crown of Rovaniemi
The top of Ounasvaara Hill rises 203 metres above sea level. At the bottom of the hill Ounasjoki River meets with Kemijoki River and continues as Kemijoki towards the south and the Bay of Bothnia. From the smooth-rock hilltop, a splendid view opens up, moulded during the Ice Age. The ice sheet covered everything else, and the top was the only ice-free spot of the landscape. In addition to seven regular downhill slopes, Ounasvaara skiing centre has a street and a half-pipe slope, as well as a children's slope. You can head for the slopes by way of a skiing school which offers equipment rental and instruction both for children and adults. For the cross-country skier there are one hundred kilometers of maintained tracks, half of which are illuminated. The tracks have been graded from easy to demanding. In the skiing centre, the novelty of the current winter is a high-speed tobogganing track, where you ride down with special toboggans provided with steering and brakes. Santasport Lapin Urheiluopisto Institute offers a variety of sports-related experiences. Nordic Fitness Sports Park is an area intended for year-round outdoors exercise and tourism. The routes marked in the woods and open terrain offer plenty of possibilities to enjoy the nature. From the equipment rental you can acquire all the necessary trappings for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or Nordic walking. After brisk outdoor activities you can relax in the heat of the sauna and with the different choices of the pool area. All your senses are attended to in the herbal baths, and the finishing touches are provided by massage and beauty treatments, the latest addition to the services. There is plenty of choice for accommodation on Ounasvaara. The new Sporthotel Rooms at Santasport Institute have recently reached completion. Lakituvat, or Hilltop Cabins, located between the skiing centre and the spa are high-class holiday chalets. Lapland Hotel Sky Ounasvaara is situated at the very top of Ounasvaara Hill, and the views from there are breathtaking.

The doll factory was founded as early as 1953.
