The public and private sectors and various organisations have started to look for new practices that respect our planet and its limited resources. I want to recycle packaging waste. Meeting these needs requires an overall shift in thinking, attitudes, operating environments, production chains, industrial ecosystems and market mechanisms. There are certain pioneering companies both in Finland and abroad that have already adapted their business to meet the needs of the circular economy. We, consumers, have many needs and wishes that are related to the circular economy. Many of us think like this. About a year ago, there were still some Member States and Members of Parliament who regarded eco-design regulations as trivial, but have now understood the market impacts of ecodesign. This could be a fantastic opportunity, both economically and environmentally, if the recycled plastics market became comparable to, for example, the oil market.” All eyes on the pioneer In Katainen’s view, the two countries competing for the title of pioneer in the circular economy are Finland and the Netherlands, but also other countries are about to join the race, such as Belgium and Germany. In order to achieve this goal, Finland must take a number of small and large steps in the fields of politics and the economy: “Finnish industries, decision-makers and other operators, such as Sitra, should raise public awareness of the circular economy as the asset on which Finland can build its long-term sustainable growth and international influencing strategy. The Commission’s aim is to speed up the building of networks. It is, for example, establishing a platform for reducing food waste. “Preparing a plastic strategy for the EU and building a functional internal market for recycled plastics are examples of topics that arouse interest. This would also strengthen our mandate in the EU regulation and improve our credibility in the market. “In order to stay in the lead, countries must develop business models and include a wide range of operators to promote the circular economy.” Katainen thinks that Finland has a fair chance of becoming the forerunner by 2025. One can only imagine the new market opportunities that will open for Finnish companies in, for example, China, which takes the circular economy seriously right now.” n ”The market for recycled plastics could rival the oil market.”. All eyes will be on the pioneer. Katainen points out that fostering a healthy, sustainable market for secondary raw materials is vital. This year’s agenda also includes an analysis of the interface between chemicals, products and waste legislation
We want to show the world that Finland is working consistently towards this goal.” These comments are by Kirsi Sormunen, Professional Board Member, who heads the extensive circular economy steering group with Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen. Finland was the first country in the world to release its own circular economy road map. “Working with such a diverse group of people is an excellent opportunity to achieve concrete results. The road map lists trials and measures that will be implemented within a couple of years in five focus areas: forest-based loops, technical loops, sustainable food system, transport and logistics, and joint actions. We can achieve things without excessive hierarchies or bureaucracy. “Critical raw materials will become scarce, businesses must become more aware of their resource costs, and nature cannot be burdened above its capacity.” n t “To function optimally, the circular economy should be based on ecosystems and industrial symbioses, rather than on efforts by individual companies. Approximately 1,500 guests from 60 different countries have been invited to the forum, and there are hundreds of interested participants on the waiting list. In 2018, the World Circular Economy Forum will be organised in another country. In Sormunen’s view, current market economy trends will inevitably make operations more resource-efficient and favour closed loops. The highly-regarded participants include the International Resource Panel. Key Finnish ministries are also involved. Everyone knows each other According to Sormunen, Finnish work for the circular economy has gained international attention thanks to its wide scope and pragmatic approach. Sormunen believes that the forum will improve Finland’s standing as the forerunner in the circular economy and in environmental matters at large. “In a small country like Finland, it is easy to build stakeholder networks, because almost everyone already knows each other. Even the current Strategic Government Programme makes a reference to the circular economy, but Sormunen thinks the measures recorded in it could be more ambitious. Countries such as Scotland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Canada have already expressed their interest. Strong networks offer a way of achieving our agenda together.” The first World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF), which will be held in June, is an opportunity to grow these networks and make them global. Finnish consumers, on the other hand, have a reputation for being stingy, and conspicuous consumption has never gained much foothold here. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” Sormunen says.. The key to robotics is training: The robots have learned to recognise tens of different waste fractions. “The plan is to design and produce PuzzlePhones in Finland. Thanks to its ability to learn, the system is adaptable and flexible, which is important in investments of this scale. Made in Silicon Valley, Oulu The start-up kicked off its operations in 2013, fuelled by 15 shareholders who know the IT business inside out. Introducing new technologies is always a slow process. ZRR units have been previously installed in Europe, Japan, China and the United States. The start-up company has put massive efforts on product development in order to convince its customers that robots and artificial intelligence are not only science fiction, but they can actually separate waste types cost-efficiently. ZenRobotics closed its first deal in Southeast Asia in March, and the total number of recycler units it has sold worldwide is now over 30. We are wasting natural resources and producing heaps of electrical and electronic waste,” explains Tapani Jokinen, CDO at Circular Devices Oy. Thus, users no longer need to discard their entire phone if they need more performance or memory or a better processor. Each robotic system costs around 600–800,000 euros. University of Jyväskylä/Depertment of Chemistry p The Department of Chemistry at the University of Jyväskylä has developed methods for recovering rare earth metals from waste and cinder. Lendable devices are an excellent example of efficient resource use, which is in line with the principles of the circular economy. Professionals in the culture and art sector in central Finland decided that they would no longer allow these expensive technical devices to stand in the way of artistic creation. At this stage, the service is designed for peer-to-peer lending in the art and culture field, but the idea could be copied and used elsewhere. The device lending service and the digital platform are one of the ideas the City of Jyväskylä received from its residents in the Circwaste project that promotes the circular economy. Ilmastonmuutos, kiristynyt lainsäädäntö, kuluttajien vaatimukset, erilaiset kriisit ja Volkswagen-skandaalin tapaiset kohut, yritysten negatiiviset ihmisoikeusvaikutukset, Finnwatchin raporttien esille nostamat globaalit epäkohdat, monet tällaiset seikat havahduttavat yritysmaailmaa. 16 Uusiouutiset 4/2017 Työnsä taitajia -palsta esittelee ympäristötoimialan monimuotoisia töitä ja niiden osaavia tekijöitä . M iten FIBS rantautui Helsingin Etelärantaan. Perustajajäseninä olivat Sosiaalija terveysalan tutkimusja kehittämiskeskus Stakes ja seitsemän yritystä, jotka tahtoivat luoda vastuullisten yritysten verkoston Suomeen. FIBS rahoittaa toimintansa jäsenmaksuin, lisäksi se saa jonkin verran julkista tukea työja elinkeinoministeriöltä, ulkoministeriöltä ja ympäristöministeriöltä. Miksi yritysten ja organisaatioiden pitäisi toimia vastuullisesti. Nyt jäseniä on vajaat kolmesataa. Mukana on enemmistö Suomen suurimmista yrityksistä. Jäsenmäärä kasvaa 5–10 prosentin vuosivauhtia. FIBSin ei ole tarvinnut ”Vastuullisuus ei ole pipertämistä, vaan kovaa valuuttaa!” Yritysvastuuverkosto FIBSin tavoite on ohjata jäsenyrityksiään vastuulliseen, kestävään ja samalla parempaan pitkän tähtäimen bisnekseen. Porukkamme on kompakti mutta tehokas, meitä on seitsemän plus yksi puolipäiväinen. FIBS syntyi vuonna 2000. Yritysvastuu on noussut yritysten tietoisuuteen megatrendien myötä. Olen myös Eettisen kaupan puolesta ry:n puheenjohtaja. Tutkimukset osoittavat, että henkilöstön monimuotoisuus lisää innovatiivisuutta ja tuloksellisuutta. Uusiouutiset 4/2017 17 toimintaa. Minkälaisia terveisiä tahdot lähettää lehtemme lukijoille. Uskaltaako FIBSin jäseneksi liittyä, jos ei ole edelläkävijäyritys, tai aiemmin soveltanut yritysvastuuta. Lisäksi luen paljon. Ympäristövastuullisuus on paitsi riskienhallintaa, myös uutta liiketoimintaa monelle yritykselle. Vastuullisuuden kenttä on niin laaja ja monimutkainen, että sen hallitseminen kokonaisvaltaisesti on erittäin haastavaa. Tahdomme kertoa tavoitteisiin sisältyvistä bisnesmahdollisuuksista kiertotalousja ympäristöalan yrityksille, ja kutsua ne mukaan syksyllä starttaavaan BISNES2030-kampanjaan, jossa yritykset ja organisaatiot pääsevät keskustelemaan tavoitteista virtuaalisella keskustelualustalla. Aiheeni on sosiaalinen vastuu kehittyvillä markkinoilla. Vastuullinen yritys ajattelee sidosryhmiään, ja varmistaa tulevaisuutensa tekemällä enemmän kuin laki määrää. Luonnon monimuotoisuus eli biodiversiteetti puolestaan on kaiken ihmiselämän ja liiketoiminnan perusta. Yritysvastuupalveluja jäsenille ovat tilaisuudet, valmennukset ja teemaryhmät, uutisja tietopalvelut sekä monimuotoisuusverkosto. Mökkeilemme jonkin verran, ja patikoimme. Joku yritys hallitsee innovatiiviset kierrätysratkaisut, mutta entä ihmisoikeusvaikutukset tuotantoketjuissa. Miten vastuullisuus, ja etenkin ympäristövastuullisuus, näkyy jäsenyritysten toiminnassa. Tavoitteet ovat seitsemäntoista kohdan ja 169 alakohdan lista koko maailman nykytilan haasteista ja mahdollisuuksista. FIBS keskittyy yritysvastuuteemoissaan yritysten ihmisoikeusvaikutuksiin, luontopääomaan, monimuotoisuusjohtamiseen sekä muihin ajankohtaisiin yritysvastuuasioihin. Mitä FIBS käytännössä tekee. Missä asut, ja mahtuuko elämääsi mitään muuta FIBSin lisäksi. Tai monimuotoisuusjohtaminen. Työviikkoni muuttui nelipäiväiseksi, sillä aloitin juuri väitöskirjani tekemisen, ja omistan sille päivän viikossa. Elämääni mahtuu työn lisäksi myös muuta mukavaa, esimerkiksi matkailua. Tuntee vastuuta kumppaniensa vastuullisuudesta, ja kehittää järkeviä ratkaisuja paikallisiin ja globaaleihin ongelmiin. Yritysvastuussa kukaan ei ole täydellinen, mutta kaikki voivat olla parempia. YK:n kestävän kehityksen tavoitteet ovat tulossa toimintaamme jatkossa entistä vahvemmin. Hyviä esimerkkejä yritysten ympäristövastuullisuudesta on koottu FIBSin verkkosivuilta löytyviin julkaisuihin. Harrastan myös ratsastusta, joogaa ja lenkkeilyä. Minimoi toimintansa negatiiviset puolet, ja maksimoi positiiviset, sekä viestii niistä avoimesti. Niiden tarkoitus on antaa konkreettisia käytännön työkaluja jäsenyrityksille verkostoitumiseen, toiminnan kehittämiseen, benchmarkingiin sekä hankkimaan tietoa ja näkyvyyttä
